Sue Polega said Shawntae is proud to help other children, and hopes other children and adults will do the same.

Shawntae Polega is a student at North Huron. She is the daughter of Sue and Terry Polega of Port Austin.

Studies: Weight-Loss Surgeries Extend Lives

August 23, 2007

Two major studies find that weight-loss surgeries reduce patients’ risk for early death.

A U.S. study found long-term mortality dropped 40% for those who had gastric bypass. And a Swedish study found that death rates fell by 29%. We spoke to a local bariatric surgeon about these findings.

These are the first long-term studies of stomach stapling and other radical treatments. America is getting fatter, 66% are overweight, 1/3 are obese. This new information is expected to put to rest the uncertainties about the pros and cons of weight-loss surgery.

Dr. Howard Simon performs up to five obesity surgeries every week. Most are gastric bypass.

“They have to be morbidly obese… they have to have had weight loss attempted in the past.”

More than 177,000 Americans had gastric bypass last year and that number keeps growing. Star Jones just came clean about her surgery.

Dr. Simon says he’s known for years that the affects are positive. “Their diabetes gets better, hypertension goes away for 70%, their cholesterol is better in 75% of the patients.”

When you free patients of those diseases, Dr. Simon says it’s only natural they’ll live longer.

When expanded, a normal stomach measures 10 inches by 4 inches. The surgery divides the stomach into a small upper pouch and a much larger, lower “remnant” pouch, then, the small intestine is rearranged. The stomach becomes the size of a fingertip.

“The operation is an incredible tool but they still need to realize they have to exercise and control what they eat.”

You may be off the operating table in an hour and a half, but this isn’t a quick fix. There are risks and it takes a serious commitment to make a lifestyle change

“The patients are the most grateful patients I deal with. They say, you saved me, you changed my life. It’s incredible how happy they are when they’ve lost weight.”

All potential patients go through a lot of screening beforehand, to make sure they’re physically and emotionally right for the surgery.

Afterward, you can only eat about half a cup of food at each meal, no sweets or alcohol. It’s dramatic enough that every patient sees a dietician on a regular basis.

The new research will be published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine.

Weight Loss Drug - Alli

August 15, 2007

PHILADELPHIA — For the first time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved an over-the-counter drug that’s designed to block fat absorption in the body.

When combined with a healthy lifestyle, research shows Alli (orlistat) will boost weight loss by 50 percent.

“In real terms, that means if you would have lost 10 pounds with diet and physical activity, with diet, physical activity and Alli, you’ll lose 15 pounds,” said Gary Foster, Ph.D., an obesity researcher from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Alli works by blocking lipases, the enzymes that break down fat. The body excretes about 25 percent of the fat instead of absorbing it as calories. Users take the pills with meals.

The downside? About half the patients in clinical trials had loose stools or an oily discharge. Also, a month’s supply could run as high as $60.

Wanda Hill is working on losing weight. She says she will not take pills to help her reach her goal. “When people begin to rely on a drug, what happens when you can no longer get that drug, or you can no longer afford that drug?”

Wanda is determined to shed 70 pounds the old fashioned way. She’s counting calories and controlling her portions.

“To me it’s a temporary thing — a quick fix,” she said of Alli.

But some disagree, saying Alli could live up to its name as a friend for those fighting fat.

Alli is a reduced-strength version of the prescription drug orlistat. You’re at highest risk for the side effects if you eat more than 15-grams of fat with your meals. Experts recommend taking a daily multivitamin like A, D, E and K to offset the loss of fat-soluble nutrients

Weight Loss Drug - Alli

August 7, 2007

We’ve heard the promise before, drink this shake, take this supplement or pop this pill and the pounds will melt away. Now for the first time, the FDA has approved an over-the-counter drug that’s designed to block fat absorption in the body. Does it work? Do the benefits outweigh the side effects?

There’s no doubt that many of us are losing the battle when it comes to losing weight, but now research show that there’s an FDA approved drug available that when combined with a healthy lifestyle will boost weight loss by 50 percent. That drug is called Alli.

“In real terms that means if you would have lost 10 pounds with diet and physical activity, with diet, physical activity and Alli, you’ll lose 15 pounds,” said Gary Foster, PhD and Obesity Researcher at Temple University.

Alli works by blocking lipases, which are the enzymes that break down fat. The body excretes about 25 percent of the fat instead of absorbing it as calories. Users take the pills with meals.

Weight Loss Secrets from Hollywood Movie Stars – LA Personal Trainer Speaks Out!

August 2, 2007

In the early nineties I had the opportunity to work with some of the most famous movie stars in the world. As a manager and personal trainer for Kathy Smith and her health club, I experienced first hand the secrets to the stars. Here are a few things they did to look like they do:

1. They cross trained, putting variety into their workout plans.

2. They never ate a lot of white flour foods. Most of their foods came out of the ground. We call them natural foods!

3. They were more concerned with their body fat levels than their weight: They concentrated more on the balance of muscle to fat, rather than their weight.

4. They did a lot of stretching: Palates and yoga were very popular.

5. They spent a lot of times outdoors working out: You may be surprised at the number of people who are in better shape tend to exercise more outdoors.

6. Their diets consisted of herb and teas. Alot of natural foods were consumed.

7. They had outside help, including support systems, trainers and groups.

With every program you try, remember it’s not about the numbers, it’s your approach! Movie Stars are just like you and me. They are no different. They have the same challenges you do, but the difference is you are not motivated by money!

For those who are not movie stars, think about this:

Some of you will not like what I have to say, even though it is the truth and that may be where the problem of American’s health problems lies. No one wants to give you the truth. My responsibility as a high profile fitness expert lies not in if you like me, or even if you buy my e books. My responsibility lies in giving you straight talk with no sugar coating it.

You want quick fixes to your health problem that has taken years to develop. You get it by purchasing gimmicks that promise you fast results. Why do you think you are reading this. The title catered to your instant gratification.

You fall for it and at the end of the day you are more frustrated than ever. Why? Because you are denying the root of your problems.

I have counseled thousands of people over my twenty years as a personal trainer, health club consultant and best selling author. And in all my travels, the answers to people’s problems with weight come down to one thing: it’s a matter of choice!

My approach with people is, either you pay a price now or you will pay a bigger price down the road. I am really tired of dancing around and trying to pat people on the back and say, “It’s OK you can do it.” When all the while, most I know are in the least bit serious about their health, and have no idea what they are in for down the road.

If you are on the fence of whether or not to start an exercise and weight loss plan, I suggest you either become hot or cold. None of this luke warm stuff. You and every person in America are on the verge of a health crisis. The longer you wait, the more of chance you have of having a disease.

You also have a matter of choice on all these gimmicks out there. Don’t waste your money on products that are not long lasting and do not teach you anything. I know you want fast results but you will just waste your money. Let me remind you, until you deal with your approach to weight loss the other is pie in the sky. Here are the keys to weight loss:

Determine HOW you are motivated

Determine the REASONS behind the unwanted behaviors.

Develop a great support system

Eat for fuel not for taste

Keep being active.

Community Coverage: Floydada’s Famous Julianne Cornelius

July 26, 2007

She lives in Floydada, but you might have seen her in the June issue of Good Housekeeping’s Quick and Simple magazine. Julianne is recognized nationally as a spokesperson for L.A. Weight Loss, now that she lost 50 pounds and 43 inches in 30 weeks, dropping from a size 16 to a size four, which is good for her, but in a small town like Floydada it could have gotten her husband into a heap of trouble. Here’s why:

“With LA Weight Loss, I was the only client in the US to win a trip to Las Vegas. So my husband and I were in the airport fixing to board the plane and a former classmate whom I went to school with and hadn’t seen in 25 years saw this ‘other woman’ standing with my husband in the airport and as it turned out I sat by her on the plane and she goes ‘Oh Julianne, I didn’t even recognize you. I was fixing to call my mom in Floydada and tell her that Eric had a girlfriend!’ So that was like an ultimate compliment,” Julianne said.

She is also Miss July in the national L.A. Weight Loss calendar, and you can watch for her in 10 national TV commercials for L.A. Weight Loss. So when you see those skinny before-and-after pictures and you think, are those people for real? We know for sure that one of them is real, and she lives right here in Floydada

The necessity for weight loss in the African American community

July 25, 2007

(BLACK PR WIRE)-Today, the rates of obesity and being overweight among multicultural groups in the U.S. are significantly disproportionate compared to white Americans. Tragically, 76 percent of African American and Hispanic American adults are considered overweight or obese.

As a physician in Harlem, I’ve witnessed a lack of recognition and awareness of the health risks for overweight and obese African Americans. In fact, in our community, there is a cultural acceptance of excess body weight. A full physique is considered a more “ideal” body type, whereas extreme thinness is not.

The patients at the highest risk for obesity are African American women from a low socioeconomic status. Sadly, this group receives the least support and education about the crucial importance of not being overweight.

This came home to me personally and was a kind of turning point in my consciousness. I was treating a patient, a young African American, single mother, trying her best to raise her kids. She had gained weight during her pregnancies. In the stress of her situation, despite many attempts lose weight, she ended up obese. She then suffered the many health consequences of being overweight and obese, eventually requiring emergency surgery. After undergoing surgery, due to her many co-morbidities and overall poor health, there were severe subsequent complications. This young mother-my patient- died.

Drugs Online - Buy Drugs Online at reasanoble prices.DrugOnline.cc provides confortable and easy way to order drugs online including drugs free shipping.

I had long been sensitive to the issues of weight loss and obesity. I have practiced in the areas of endocrinology and metabolism for more than 25 years. But, the loss of this young woman, a clear and direct result of the obesity that overwhelmed her, galvanized in me a determination to make a difference.

I’ve been able to institute programs at North General Hospital in Harlem, which make little dents in the obesity problem in the community- like a program for obese teenagers who weigh more than 400 pounds and a “makeover” program for patients with obesity and diabetes.

Physicians need to constructively educate patients on weight control for total wellbeing. Every day, it seems, I’m asked about weight loss gimmicks that I know won’t work.

That’s why I’m excited about GlaxoSmithKline’s new alli weight loss program directed at overweight adults dedicated to losing weight. alli is the first FDA approved weight loss product available without a prescription. alli product support program gives adults some solid knowledge about eating a low fat healthy diet and weight management. The alli starter packs includes Welcome and Companion Guides, a Guide to Healthy Eating, a Daily Journal, a Calorie and Fat Counter, Quick Fact Cards, and free access to an individually tailored online action plan on the website www.myalli.com.

When used as directed, alli’s program can help people lose weight, adopt healthier eating patterns and maintain that weight loss.

July 25: The Carolina Center To Discuss Quick and Safe Weight Loss (Raleigh)

July 21, 2007

As part of his new Midday Health Series, John C. Pittman, MD, of the Carolina Center for Integrative Medicine (CCIM), will present “Lose Weight Quickly & Safely” on Thursday, July 26th from 12:15-1:00PM. This free presentation will be held at CCIM’s office at 4505 Fair Meadow Lane, Suite 111 in Raleigh.

For 65% of U.S. adults, obesity and the need to lose weight are serious issues. In response to this, Dr. Pittman says that for years, physicians have been recommending a healthy food diet that balances protein, fat, and carbohydrate so that blood sugar stays relatively low and fat burning is encouraged. He explains that in reality, this diet is often very hard for many individuals to carry out as portion control, food choices, and lack of structure inevitably derails most typical diet attempts.

“Other than Gastric By-Pass surgery, which is risky and costly for most individuals, The Carolina Center feels that Meal Replacement Programs offer the greatest advantages and benefits to safe and effective weight loss,” says Dr. Pittman. “These programs are structured diets that use meal replacement products, along with a prescribed low-fat, low-glycemic meal, to provide the best outcomes in terms of successful weight loss and reduction of disease risk.”

While Meal Replacement Programs can provide the structure needed for success, often individuals still struggle with hunger and cravings. “Addressing deficiencies in neurotransmitters that control the parts of the brain involved in appetite and satisfaction can be a key element in helping these people control their intake,” says Dr. Pittman. During the presentation, Dr. Pittman will explain how the use of certain amino acid replacements, along with urine testing to confirm adequate blood levels, can be a key tool in helping those who have never succeeded with a weight loss program.

Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online.

“Another unique component of The Carolina Center Medical Weight Loss Program is the accountability, which is central to helping our patients achieve their goals and keep the weight off,” adds Dr. Pittman. “This support is provided every two weeks during the active weight loss phase so that problems are addressed quickly and success is not compromised.” Dr. Pittman notes that regular physician visits are also required to be sure that health benefits are being achieved while limiting any risks from the process.

Seating for this presentation is limited and advanced registration is required in case of cancellation. To reserve your seat for the event, contact Louise Cottrell at (919) 848-1025 extension 3 or register via e-mail to register@carolinacenter.com
